Moving house in Staffordshire involves more coordination than most people realise. This checklist covers everything from eight weeks out to the day itself — so nothing falls through the cracks.
8 Weeks Before
- Book your removal company — popular weekends in Staffordshire fill up fast
- Start decluttering room by room — charity shops, skip hire or Facebook Marketplace
- Notify your landlord or get your sale confirmed
- Research schools or GPs in your new area if needed
4–6 Weeks Before
- Start collecting boxes — supermarkets, Facebook groups, or order proper moving boxes
- Begin packing non-essential rooms: loft, garage, spare bedroom
- Redirect your post via Royal Mail (takes up to 5 working days to set up)
- Notify: bank, HMRC, employer, pension provider, insurance, subscriptions
- Notify: DVLA, electoral roll, GP and dentist
- Contact utility providers (gas, electric, water, broadband) with your move date
2 Weeks Before
- Confirm everything with your removal company
- Pack seasonal and sentimental items
- Sort out parking for the removal van at both properties — contact the council if needed for suspension permits
- Start using up freezer food
Moving Week
- Pack remaining rooms, leaving out only what you need for the last few nights
- Defrost fridge and freezer (24 hours before the van arrives)
- Charge all devices — you won't know where your chargers are for a while
- Prepare an "essentials box" for moving night: kettle, mugs, toilet roll, phone charger, change of clothes, keys
Moving Day
- Clear access for the van — keep kids and pets out of the way
- Take meter readings before you leave (photograph them)
- Check every room, cupboard, loft, garage and shed before locking up
- Hand over all keys and codes to the agent or buyer
- Take a photo of the property locked up — you'll want the memory
